The Southern Presbyterian Journal began, led by Dr. L. Nelson Bell and others who were concerned over evidences of modernism in the Presbyterian Church, U.S. (aka Southern Presbyterian Church)

An attempted three-way merger of the PCUS, the PCUSA, and the United Presbyterian Church of North America (UPCNA) failed. Resistance to this merger came largely from the Journal and its readership.

Bill Hill established the Presbyterian Evangelistic Fellowship.

G. Aiken Taylor became the new editor and the magazine became simply The Presbyterian Journal.

Under Taylor’s leadership, Journal Day began in 1960 as occasion for conservative fellowship and it continued until 1980.

Concerned Presbyterians, Inc. was formed under the leadership of Ruling elder Kenneth Keyes.

Vanguard Presbytery is formed, September 7, 1972, to receiving churches departing from the PCUS. Having served its purpose, Vanguard was disbanded in 1977, its churches merged into Covenant Presbytery.

Feb. 13th : Warrior Presbytery is formed by churches leaving Tuscaloosa Presbytery (PCUS).

May 18-19 : Convocation of Sessions met, voting 349-16 to call for a new denomination.
