Day of Prayer

May 21, 2023

May 21, 2023 has been set aside as a Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving for the PCA to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Convocation of Sessions held in Atlanta on May 19, 1973, marking one of the significant initial steps that led to the formation of the PCA in December of the same year.

Our hope is that, on this day, churches across our denomination will incorporate prayer into their worship that offers:

PRAISE

for Christ’s enduring Church

THANKSGIVING

for the foundation, rooted in God’s faithfulness, that this Convocation of Sessions laid 50 years ago for our continuing church

PRAYER

for the PCA

Why May 21st?

On May 19, 1973 in Atlanta Georgia in the sanctuary of Westminster Presbyterian Church 450 ruling elders from 261 churches representing 70,800 members joined together in a convocation of presbyters or sessions. To learn more about this seminal gathering, click the button below.

Suggested Prayer for Sunday, May 21, 2023

Almighty God and Loving Father,

On this Sunday, as we commemorate the Convocation of Sessions of 1973, where the PCA was born, we give you praise for the faithful ruling and teaching elders you have raised up to serve your Church who were and are true to the Bible, the Reformed faith, and obedient to the Great Commission.  We give thanks for our session and ask you to grant them wisdom and faithfulness in their leadership.

Grant, O Lord, that we remain committed to the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, which are a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.  We affirm that the Bible alone is the verbally inspired word of God.  It is our only rule of faith and practice.

Give us a fresh commitment to the Great Commission.  May we be diligent in making disciples, in baptizing our children and unbaptized believers, and in teaching them to obey all that Christ commands us.  Lead us as we seek to make known to everyone God’s saving grace.  Give us the willingness to be a church that is Reformed and earnestly evangelical as we engage our Jerusalem, Samaria, and the world for the advancement of your kingdom and your renown.

We pray this for the glory of God alone, as we wait for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.  In Jesus’ name, we pray.  Amen.
